The scale

Four levels, and never an average.

Proficiency is recorded against a standard on a 1 to 4 scale, and an unscored standard stays unscored rather than counting as a zero. Each level carries a number, a word, and a shape, so it reads the same for a student, a parent, and a screen reader.
